Imre Bukta: Let’s Cultivate Our Gardens Exhibition

On display at GODOT Institute of Contemporary Art until 30 April 2023

Imre Bukta’s approach is sometimes ironic, sometimes melancholic, sometimes (socially) critical or permissive, but always with exceptional empathy for his subjects.

In his most recent paintings, there is a stylistic classicism: his subjects are increasingly approaching traditional painting genres such as life, interior, portrait and landscape. The decorativeness of the “fall” surface-filling motifs (stippling, notching, net patterns, etc.) is intensified and comes to life independently of the composition.

For four decades his art has been the subject of continuous acclaim, he has represented Hungary three times at the Venice Biennale (1980, 1988, 1999). He currently lives in Mezőszemere and teaches at the Painting Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts.
