Imre Bukta: Let’s Cultivate Our Gardens!

On 27 November, Imre Bukta, the most influential and internationally significant master of contemporary Hungarian art, opened his exhibition entitled Let’s Cultivate Our Gardens!

The exhibition, which celebrates the 70th anniversary of the artist’s birth, will exclusively feature new works. The artist conveys the world that surrounds him in rural Hungary through a vision based on the most modern techniques.

This exceptional art event will be on view in over 1000 m2 of the Godot Contemporary Art Institute’s four-storey exhibition space in Óbuda until spring 2023.

What is the relationship of the countryside to nature today, how can we live in the countryside, how do values get lost, what are the difficulties of finding a home, how can we face the passing of time, why is it so important for people to create and work? Imre Bukta’s works reflect on these questions with the tools of high art, creating nuanced and rich layers of meaning.

The most influential and internationally significant master of contemporary Hungarian fine art lives and works in Mezőszemere, a village in Heves County.

Bukta Imre Majd Irunk Exhibition Godot Modern Art Museum 2021
Imre Bukta (1952) started his career as a self-taught artist in the 1970s. His art has strong ties to the lifestyle and culture of the Hungarian people living in rural areas and working in agriculture. From the very beginning, his subjects were the objects, places and characters of everyday life, which he depicted in a wide variety of ways: he freely used all kinds of natural materials (hair, wood, corn, tiles, matchsticks, etc.), which he assembled in an assemblage style. In his objects, installations and performances, he juxtaposes everyday tools of peasant material culture in a self-evident way, or uses them to build unique machine-like structures. His portraits and compositions can be understood as special sociological studies, but in contrast to the analytical perspective of an outsider and distancer, Bukta sees and perceives this peculiar world with its sweet-sweet overtones from the inside.

His approach is sometimes ironic, sometimes melancholic, sometimes (socially) critical or permissive, but always with exceptional empathy for his subjects. In his most recent paintings, there is a stylistic classicism: his subjects are increasingly approaching traditional painting genres such as life, interior, portrait and landscape. The decorativeness of the "fall" surface-filling motifs (stippling, notching, net patterns, etc.) is intensified and comes to life independently of the composition. For four decades his art has been the subject of continuous acclaim, he has represented Hungary three times at the Venice Biennale (1980, 1988, 1999). He currently lives in Mezőszemere and teaches at the Painting Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts.
