Gypsy Art Exhibition At KuglerArt Salon And Gallery
There is a special gallery in an impressive apartment in the heart of the city centre, next to Deák Square. Its owner, film director Edit KÅ‘szegi, has made dozens of documentaries about Gypsy artists and Roma culture over the past 20 years. The apartment’s curator specialises in works by Gypsy artists, with floor-to-ceiling paintings on the walls.
Â
A selection of the paintings on display has been shown at the Hungarian National Gallery, the Ethnographic Museum, in Beijing, and under the auspices of UNESCO in New York and Paris, and most recently in Passau and Stockholm. Music and ethnographic films, books and albums on the theme enrich the offer.
Â
Many of the Roma painters are not professional artists who make a living from their work, and their works fall somewhere between folk art, naïve painting and contemporary art. Some of the paintings on display at KuglerArt – and some of which are available for purchase – belong to the genre of outsider art, which is used to categorise the unclassifiable works of self-taught artists. The opening hours are rhapsodic, so it is advisable to book in advance. The Gallery also regularly hosts family-style apartment theatre performances, including some of the country’s most renowned actors. Â
